A trip to Cuba by the Black and Latino Student Caucus, from May 19-June 4, 2000, will allow students to observe the healthcare services provided and learn about the public health system. The five leading causes of death will be identified through interviews of Cuban public health officials. The written and spoken goals of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health and public health officials, to address these five leading causes of death, will be recorded. The quality of care provided at two health care provider institutions will be observed and described. Cuban citizens will be observed in two health care facilities, and asked to describe the level of satisfaction of health care received, perceived quality of care received, problems in health care services provided. General observations will also be made of the two facilities and recorded. Two Cuban Ministry of Public Health officials will be interviewed and asked to list the five leading causes of death in Cubans, as well as the plans/goals of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health in addressing these five causes of death. Observations of the quality of health care services provided by the Cuban Health Care System, five leading causes of death, and goals of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health regarding these five causes of death will be used to provide a brief perspective on Cuban healthcare issues seldom observed by United States citizens. These experiences will be captured visually by photographs, as an additional means of displaying health care observances in Cuba.

Learning Objectives: 1. 5 leading causes of death in Cuba. 2. Ascertain the goals of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health to address these 5 leading causes of death. 3. Articulate the quality of care provided to Cuban citizens at designated sites
