In 1997 the Division of Diabetes Translation’s Program Development Branch of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion began development of a Management Information System. This Web based system is being built to comprehensively collect information associated with activities involving the grantees of a national chronic diabetes program along with projects that enhance ways to increase the reach of those projects to address high risk populations.

This system employs a comprehensive uniform systematic method of collecting information concerning the characteristics, activities, and accomplishments of programs and projects that are funded by CDC that has historically varied in content and detail.

This presentation will provide information on how the system was conceived, developed and implemented. Including needs assessments, information needs identification of categories of information, screen development and navigational aids. Participants will also understand the technical framework used and how information was used to populate fields. Use of the MIS will aid in the programmatic management, policy and financial strategies needed to maximize Federal dollars used for funding programs in 50 states 8 territories and the District of Columbia.

Training will be a part of the MIS, and will involve both CDC and state staff. Training will be developed around each individuals need to understand how to access, use and navigate through this system. Training emphasizes group instruction/demonstrations with test scripts and sample data to guide users through a realistic interaction with the MIS. On-line help with definitions and navigational support will be part of the system.

Learning Objectives: 1. Identify conception, development and implementation of a management information system for a chronic disease program in public health. 2. Identify key information categories, screen development, navigational aids and report development. 3. Identify key training strategies to train users to navigate through the management information system
