Bettina M. Scott, PhD, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockwall 2, Ste. 800, Rockville, MD 20857, 301/443-2658, bscott@samhsa.gov

The Bible includes a number of sacred texts that seem to advocate violence against women. Throughout history, these texts seemed to have served to validate patriarchal and spousal violence against women. A new reading of these texts provide a new way to interpret the meaning of these biblical stories. The public health professional has a role in neutralizing the negative effects of the androcentric reading of these texts by providing a fresh look at these stories and providing ways to change these attitudes.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the session, participants will be able to: Reinterpret the meaning of biblical stories which previously have served to validate patriarchal and spousal violence against women. Identify means to combat the negative effects of these texts
