The Hispanic population of Los Angeles has rates of diabetes and hypertension far greater than any other ethnicity. As this population ages, incidence of these diseases grows at a greater rate than other ethnicities.

We investigated some of the possible causes of these statistics and compared our findings to those of other investigators in specific and general populations

We have surveyed 400 women who attend East Los Angeles College who identify themselves as Hispanic. Questions in the survey were based on topics raised in focus groups and questions used in other surveys of Hispanic health attitudes.

Learning Objectives: 1. Audience will understand the cultural context of nutrition and fitness in Latinas of college age. 2. Audience will understand major barriers to fitness and healthy diet among these women. 3. Audience will understand how this group is the same and how they differ from other women in this age group who are not Latinas. 4. Audience will have some ideas of programs which might be more effective because of the findings of this study
