Abstract #17687

Nationally coordinated state-level health surveys

David E. Nelson, MD,, MPH, Behavioral Surveillance Branch, Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta, GA, , DENelson@cdc.gov

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has extensive experience in working with states on the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and other nationally coordinated state-level health surveys. CDC joined with the National Cancer Institute to sponsor a telephone adaptation of the 2000 National Health Interview Survey cancer module to be administered as part of the California Health Interview Survey to a representative sample of the California population. This presentation focuses on the benefits and challenges of a federal public health agency working with state agencies to assess population health.
