Abstract #18723

Health Status, Helpers, and Program Knowledge: Evidence from the 1998 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey

Daniel Waldo, Information and Methods Group Office of Strategic Planning, HCFA, , N/A

The Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) is conducted of a nationally-representative sample of Medicare enrollees. Survey results, combined with administrative records, provide a basis for HCFA’s Medicare program impact analyses, cost projections, and evaluations of initiatives such as the National Medicare Education Program. This presentation will focus enrollees in 1998, the most recent time period available, and will explore correlations among demographic, socioeconomic, and health status characteristics of the women respondents, their knowledge and use of program benefits, and the types of helpers they use.

Learning Objectives: The study purpose is to identify relationships between women's knowledge of available benefits and selected socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. Knowledge of various aspects of medicare is an important precursor to use of preventive services
