The goal of this study was to determine trends and geographic patterns in the prevalence of anemia among low-income preschoolers in the Four Corner States (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah). Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System were analyzed. We analyzed hemoglobin measurements for Arizona (1992-1997) and hematocrit measurements for Colorado, New Mexico and Utah (1989-1997). We randomly selected one measurement per child per year of visit to avoid double-counting and potential bias. Colorado, New Mexico and Utah had a decline in the prevalence of anemia during the study years. In contrast, Arizona had an increase from 1992 (26.4%) to 1997 (38.5%) with a decrease beginning in 1997. However this increase was not uniform throughout the state. The maps displayed below portray how the prevalence has changed by county during the study. For example, one county showed an increase from 25.2% to 42.8 %, while another county showed a decrease from 47.4% to 31.8%. These maps clearly identify areas with high prevalence for targeting intervention programs.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. Discuss the analysis of data obtained from the Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System to assess anemia status among low income children enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Woman, Infants, and Children in the Four Corner States. 2. Describe changes in the prevalence of anemia over time. 3. Use mapping techniques to identify geographic patterns of the prevalence of anemia
