An environment with high density of allergens is one factor that has contributed to the increase in asthma prevalence and severity, particularly in indigent, urban populations. Air purifiers have been promoted as a relatively inexpensive and easy way to reduce the allergen load in homes, yet there is a lack of randomized studies attributing improved asthma outcomes to their use. We are in the final phase of a longitudinal pilot study to assess systematically the impact of an air purifier with HEPA filter on levels of antigens and airborne particulate and asthma outcomes. The final sample will include 50 asthmatic children aged 6-13 with moderate to severe asthma. Families were recruited from two urban hospital clinics and screened for those most likely to comply with proper use of the purifier. This study employs a randomized cross-over design with HEPA and placebo filter conditions. Purifiers run in children’s bedrooms 24 hours a day for a six-month period. At baseline and after three and six months we collect dust samples for antigen analysis, analyze input/output air for particulate, conduct a home environment assessment and a medical assessment, and collect demographic, utilization and symptom information. Results from cross-sectional phase one data show no significant group differences in terms of asthma outcomes and participant satisfaction. Antigen and particulate levels will be analyzed when all families have completed phase two and will be presented. Also, analyses will compare the same child in both conditions as well as between groups data.

Learning Objectives: 1. recognize the impact of an air purifier with HEPA filter on levels of environmental allergens in urban homes 2. describe the impact of an air purifier with HEPA filter on asthma outcomes and patient satisfaction of inner city children
