Denise R. Kohn, MPH, Program Coordinator, Adolescents, International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region, 120 Wall Street, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10005-3902, 212-214-0285, dkohn@ippfwhr.org

Family Planning Associations (FPAs) affiliated with International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR) have used technology to different degrees in their youth programs, but until recently the impact of this use has never been measured. The Regional Project on Technology and Youth documents and assesses the utilization of technology in five youth programs of FPAs in the region. It analyzes which programs have been most successful, how programs were implemented, and lessons learned thus far in technology use. The project analyzes why FPAs have decided to use computer-based activities and how they have implemented them. It examines how young adults’ knowledge about, usage of, and access to sexual and reproductive health services, strategies and marketing techniques has been affected as a result of technology use, as well as how FPAs with lack of resources can expand their use of technology. Each of the programs use technology differently in their youth programs. Examples of technology use are a CyberCafe, an interactive computer program, a CD-rom on sexually transmitted infection prevention, a program on gender roles/male involvement, computer programs in schools, and internet access for youth. The project studies how gender, socio-economic level and educational background determines who uses technology and how that affects their reproductive and sexual health. The lessons learned are applicable to FPAs and other organizations using technology. The outcomes are valuable in helping organizations to determine which approach is most appropriate for their needs and population, and for those who want to expand upon the work they are doing.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant will assess how computer-based activities affects knowledge about and access to sexual and reproductive health services for young people
