Faith communities as models in eliminating health disparities in HIV/AIDS among racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities

HIV prevention/education advocates have noted the contrast between the gains of some segments of our society and the apparent losses among others in access to medical care and prevention/education. This disparity has been specifically identified among communities of color including sexual minorities of color. In addition, health educators have noted the influence of faith communities upon health especially among minority populations. This is balanced with a tradition of social justice among many faith communities. Further, health educators emphasize the need for all segments of the faith and health communities to unite and organize in eliminating these disparities. This panel presentation followed by small group discussion and large group summary will emphasize the challenges and successes of collaborating and partnering among faith and health communities to address HIV prevention/education among racial, ethnic and sexual minorities. The small group discussion will enable participants to address specific minority health and faith community issues including African American, Latino, Asian, and sexual minorities. Learning Objectives: 1) understand the impact of faith communities upon racial, ethnic and sexual minorities in relation to health and HIV; 2) identify successful efforts by faith communities to address HIV prevention/education among racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities; 3) facilitate discussion regarding broad issue of health disparities in HIV among communities of color including sexual minorities of color; 4) encourage large and small group discussion regarding community-based organization and activism by faith and health communities in eliminating health disparities in HIV among racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities
