Like many regions in the US, South Carolina is not prepared to meet the growing health needs of its burgeoning Hispanic population. This pilot study aims to address these needs by develop individual and organizational empowerment programs leading to community partnerships for cervical cancer prevention among Hispanic women. The project has 3 main aims: 1) to build partnerships with the Hispanic community in South Carolina by developing the SCPCP; 2) to use explorative, qualitative research methods (e.g. focus groups) to examining issues of gender, ethnicity as it relates to attitudes and behaviors around cervical cancer prevention among Hispanic women; and, 3) to create a comprehensive database of statewide cervical cancer control programs and resources with detailed information on the variety and quality (e.g., cultural competence) of those resources to serve Hispanic women. The results of the pilot will provide the groundwork for a larger grant application for a research and demonstration project addressing Hispanic women and cervical cancer prevention and control in South Carolina.
