Abstract #44775

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Approach to Sexuality and Sexual Health

Laura Laski, MD, MPH, Reproductive Health, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), 220 East 42nd Street, New York, NY 10017, (212) 297-5181, laski@unfpa.org

In 1999, with support from the Ford Foundation, UNFPA established a working group on sexuality. Composed of headquarter staff and technical experts from NGOs (IPPF/WHR, Engender Health and SIECUS), the group used a participatory and consultative process to determine the agency’s needs. Two needs were identified: for guidance on programming, and for technical training for UNFPA’s own staff.

In January 2002, a three-day workshop was held with selected “country support teams” staff members. During that same week, sexuality was discussed as one of the three “emerging issues” for UNFPA to consider in its future directions. This presentation will cover the efforts of the working group, describe related field experiences to date, and offer substantive linkages of sexuality concepts to the agency’s reproductive health work.
