The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) is a public and private sector partnership program established to reduce the burden of diabetes The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) workgroup of the NDEP was formed with participation from 22 different organizations representing multiple ethnic groups with diverse language, culture, history and community resources. Among the challenges faced by the AAPI workgroup of NDEP are manpower for translation of mainstream NDEP materials, cultural competency in nutritional campaigns, healthcare access in isolated communities, issues in immigrant health, and collaboration strategies within such tremendous diversity. Many diabetes awareness materials have been translated into 11 Asian or Pacific Islander languages, and are available on the NDEP website. Radio and print PSA with culturally appropriate nutrition information and images are currently available and will be demonstrated. Evaluation of the “audience reach” of such materials will be discussed. The development process for a meal planner originally created by NDEP for a Latino/Hispanic community and adapted for Asian American Pacific Islander audience will be described. Dissemination of NDEP materials requires an extensive partnership network and collaboration of organizations to access these ethnic communities with high risk of diabetes.
