Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM) has offered an MPH program in Occupational Health and Safety Management (OHSM) via distance learning since 1998. The Center for Applied Environmental Public Health offers courses via live Internet with no residency requirement. In December 2000, Tulane SPHTM graduated the first MPH candidates in this program to fulfill their degree requirements; another cohort graduated December 2001. An evaluation was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the synchronous Internet delivery and of the value of the OHSM curriculum. Graduates were interviewed by telephone soon after graduation and asked a number of questions regarding program successes and areas needing improvement, technology training and technical support, instructional support, faculty responsiveness and academic advising. Students were also asked whether the program improved their effectiveness as managers, and other job related questions. Supplemental data from earlier course evaluations were also analyzed to validate responses regarding technological issues.
