Region II Asthma Initiative: A Public Health and Community Response to Asthma
This initiative is a joint partnership between the New York Field Office of U.S. Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA) of DHHS, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Mt.Sinai School of Medicine and many other key governmental and private stakeholders in Region II which cover New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands-areas of the country where asthma prevalence is very high. This is a multi-pronged effort between public health and the community coalitions to fight asthma through implementation of the DHHS Asthma Plan and the Recommendations of the DHHS/EPA Joint Taskforce on Environmental Health Risks to Children. The presentation will review the process utilized in developing and maintaining the partnership on asthma since 1999. The components of the Region II Asthma Action Plan will be discussed. Some of the significant activities in promoting asthma education, information dissemination, surveillance and program evaluation, health service research, and health services by primary care providers will be identified. These action steps are recommendations from participants of the Regional Asthma Summits in 2000 and 2001. They also serve to enhance federal and state partnerships, implement long-term action plans at regional and at individual state level, and to combat the complex environmental exposures, genetics, and access to care barriers problem of asthma.
Learning Objectives: 1. At the conclusion of the session, the participants will be able to describe recent Region II Federal, state, and community responses to asthma. 2. Assess the need for Asthma planning. 3. Describe the different approaches to planning including matrix-based approach in New York State. 4. Recognize the benefits of public/private partnership for developing asthma coalitions. 5. Identify government and private resources for asthma activities.
