The Pew Internet & American Life survey reported that in 2000 fifty-two million adult Americans, 55% of the Internet-user population, have turned to Internet sources to seek health information
(http://www.pewinternet.org/reports/reports.asp?Report=26
&Section=ReportLevel2&Field=Level2ID&ID=123). This panel addresses electronic health information for the public in three major areas: creating and selecting content, disseminating information and training to grass roots groups, and applying that information for personal and social change. It will offer models for building quality content on a web site, tailoring information to specific groups, integrating web based information into curricula, reaching out to Internet novices, and assessing the impact of Internet health sites. Presenters will range from experienced web site creators and managers to new experts in web based health information outreach programs.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1. discuss selection criteria to create and maintain quality content on health related web sites. 2. identify sources of funding for health information outreach programs and strategies to disseminate electronic health information to working class communities, teens, and older adults. 3. describe how different users of electronic health information apply their online experiences to enhance health decision making and knowledge about health.
