Community Health Workers SPIG

Submit Abstract

The Community Health Worker (CHW) SPIG welcomes abstracts that address issues important to CHWs (also known as lay health advisors, promotoras, outreach workers, and community health advisors).Special consideration will be given to papers presented or co-presented by CHWs. PLEASE INDICATE CLEARLY IN THE TEXT OF YOUR ABSTRACT WHETHER A CHW WILL BE PRESENTING. Abstracts submitted for presentations in other languages are welcome (and we will work with presenter to assure that translation is available), but the abstract should be written in English. Presentations that are interactive and participatory in nature are especially encouraged.

We invite members of other sections, caucuses and SPIGS to submit relevant abstracts to the CHW SPIG and look forward to working collaboratively to strengthen APHA's commitment to community health outreach.

The CHW SPIG will organize a minimum of 6 oral sessions and 2 poster sessions. The following themes related to CHWs are of particular interest:
  • Building CHW advocacy skills and promoting CHW activism
  • Career development and education for CHWs (including challenges of CHW credentialing)
  • CHWs as integral members of the health care team: successful strategies and challenges
  • CHWs as promoters of community environmental health
  • Community Health Workers reaching youth
  • Highlighting local CHW programs (Washington D.C., Virgina, Maryland)
  • New and emerging policies that affect CHW work
  • Other issues of importance to CHWs
  • Reimbursement and sustainability for CHW programs: innovative approaches
The CHW SPIG also invites submissions for SPECIAL SESSION proposals (90 minutes in length). SPECIAL SESSION proposals can be joint presentations organized around a particular theme, or participatory skill-building workshops. There may be 1 or 2 timeslots available for us to consider these types of requests. SPECIAL SESSION proposals should be submitted along with each individual presentation abstract, so that reviewers understand that the abstracts are part of a proposed joint session. Please submit an overall session abstract which includes the theme or focus of the session, the titles of the papers that will be part of the session, the authors, order of presentation and length of time for each person. Also please indicate whether or not you would like to have the individual abstracts considered for other sessions, if your proposed SPECIAL SESSION is not accepted. Please include contact information (phone and e-mail) for the person in charge of the session on the overall session abstract so that we can contact you easily.

If you are new to this process, please note that all abstracts submitted to the CHW SPIG are peer-reviewed and evaluated using the following criteria: importance/originality, quality and description of subject matter, clarity and interest of presentation, quality and completeness of supporting data/philosophy, and CHW participation in the presentation. We would encourage you to view abstracts from previous years for format and content examples.
