Actions of researchers for upgrading PHN's practices through mutual cooperation in Japan (2)

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to clarify the approaches of the actions researchers intended for upgrading PHN's practices through mutual cooperation. Method: The subjects were 6 PHNs working at public health centers. The method was a qualitative research by participant observation. The data was collected descriptively, interpreted, and categorized. The duration of collecting data was two years for each subject. Results: As the result of this study, following categories were found as approaches of the researchers, intened to establish specialization update, to stabilize the best-practice etc.(For the details of the intentions, see abstract 1). 1) Motivating PHNs to think, to implement and to explain by themselves the professional practices of PHNs. 2) Showing PHNs the useful evidences found by various studies conducted in the field. 3) Supporting PHNs to develop and strengthen collaboration with their colleagues and other health care workers. 4) Supporting PHNs to promote the changes intended to make their practices smoother and more effective. 5) Demonstrating PHNs the concrete methods of the practices. 6) Developing mutual cooperation between PHNs and researchers. 7) Guiding PHNs towards their goals. 8) Explaining PHNs their identity as public health nursing specialists. 9) Appealing researcher's interpretations and ideas to PHNs. 10) Reporting and Publishing the significance and the effects of the intended changes in the practices. 11) Corresponding to PHNs' needs to upgrade their practices. Discussion: Researchers approached the PHNs with various intentions after due considerations to their situations and perceptions. It remains as a matter to be discussed still further to clarify the effects for upgrading PHN's practices.
