The Community Health Worker (CHW) Special Primary Interest Group (SPIG) welcomes abstracts that address issues important to CHWs (also known as lay health advisors, promotoras, outreach workers, and community health advisors). SPECIAL CONSIDERATION WILL BE GIVEN TO PAPERS THAT DEMONSTRATE THAT CHWs WILL PLAY A LEADING ROLE IN DEVELOPING AND PRESENTING YOUR WORK. PLEASE DESCRIBE CLEARLY IN THE TEXT OF YOUR ABSTRACT WHAT ROLE CHW WILL PLAY IN YOUR PRESENTATION. Abstracts submitted for presentations in other languages are welcome (and we will work with the presenter to assure that translation is available), however the abstract should be written in English. Presentations that are interactive and participatory in nature are especially encouraged.

We invite members of other sections, caucuses and SPIGS to submit relevant abstracts to the CHW SPIG and look forward to working collaboratively to strengthen APHA's commitment to community health outreach.

The CHW SPIG will organize a minimum of six oral sessions and two poster sessions. We are accepting submissions for the following general topics:
  • CHWs as integral members of the healthcare team
  • Capacity building and training for CHWs
  • New and emerging roles of CHWs including researchers, patient navigators, trainers, etc
  • Outcomes and evaluation of CHW programs
  • Other issues that are important for CHWs
We are particularly interested in proposals that address the following questions:

· What innovative ways has your CHW program found to document and evaluate the impact of your program on the health & well being of the community you serve? What role are CHWs playing in this process?

· What methodology do you used to build CHWs' capacity? What internal and external mechanisms are in place to support the CHWs role? How does this affect the way they approach and conduct work in their communities?

· What have been your experiences conducting cross-cultural CHW
Programs? Can CHW programs serve to build bridges between marginalized communities?

· What is the role of CHWs in addressing access to social conditions and resources that promote health. How have CHWs done this in your program?

· What role are CHWs playing in healthcare delivery including; improving health outcomes, self-management skills, counseling and patient education? What are the costs savings associated with healthcare systems that integrate the CHW model?

If you are new to this process, please note that all abstracts submitted to the CHW SPIG are peer-reviewed and evaluated using the following criteria: importance/originality, quality and description of subject matter, clarity and interest of presentation, interactive format and CHW leadership and participation. We would encourage you to view abstracts from previous years for format and content examples.
