The theme of the conference in 2005 is "Evidence-Based Policy and Practice." Consistent with this theme, the topic for the DisAbility SPIG Chair's Forum on Sunday afternoon is: "Evidence-Based Practice in Disability and Public Health: Emerging Issues and Trends." Papers which reflect this theme are encouraged, but the forum invites abstracts in all areas of disability policy, practice, and research. The proposed topic areas for sessions in 2005 are:
  • Children and Adolescents with Disabilities
  • DisAbility Forum Poster I
  • DisAbility Forum Poster II
  • DisAbility Forum Poster III
  • DisAbility Forum Special Primary Interest Group Chair's Forum
  • DisAbility Forum Special Primary Interest Group Executive Committee Meeting
  • Disability Surveillance
  • Disability and Health Promotion I
  • Disability and Health Promotion II
  • Emerging Evidence in Disability and Health Promotion
  • Emerging Issues in Disability
  • Evidence Based Policy and Practice in Disability
  • Health Care Access
  • Health Care Issues for Home and Work
  • Personal Assistance Services
  • Student Research in Disability
  • Technology and Innovation in Health Promotion for People with Disabilities
As always, sessions may be added, deleted, combined, or otherwise revised depending upon the quantity and quality of abstracts submitted.

The DisAbility Forum offers three types of sessions:
  1. Scientific sessions--oral presentations of 12 minutes (+ 3 minutes Q & A). Priority for these sessions is given to scientific presentations of more developed work, which usually includes some level of data analysis.
  2. Poster sessions--"DisAbility Resource Fair". This format is most appropriate for descriptions of developing work, new intervention programs, resource centers, etc.
  3. The Disability Study Group will meet on Sunday AM and focus on Emerging Issues in Disability and Public Health for more informal discussion of papers prepared and distributed in advance of the meeting. Individuals wishing to propose a paper for discussion at this session should select the "Disability Study Group" when submitting their abstract and indicate their rationale for wishing to participate in this session in the "Comments to Organizers".

All presenters will be expected to make their presentations accessible to all participants. Presenters will be notified about the DisAbility SPIG required guidelines for accessibility.

Students take note: The DisAbility SPIG is committed to developing future leaders in the field. Submissions from students are encouraged, and students should indicate their student status in the Comments box.

Abstract Review Procedures
The DisAbility SPIG receives more abstracts than it can accept for oral presentation. Abstracts are reviewed anonymously by three to four professionals in public health and disability. Abstracts are rank ordered using the total mean score from the 3-4 reviewers. Abstracts with the highest scores that are related to this year's theme have the greatest likelihood for being accepted for oral presentation. Review criteria include: Importance/Originality, Methods, Supporting Data, Conclusions.
