The Socialist Caucus, interested in providing a forum for exchange of ideas on the detrimental aspects of capitalism on health, health care, and the environment, organizes a series of sessions that analyzes crucial factors that affect a democratic public health policy and practice. Interested in presenting national and international case-studies, the Socialist Caucus features sessions that elucidate the local impact of broader economic processes such as current trends of privatization, the attack on the welfare state, and the for-profit organization of health services and pharmaceuticals. The Socialist Caucus is particularly interested in providing a socialist critique to “Evidence Based Policy and Practice,” the theme of APHA 2005, which is usually based on technocratic scientific assumptions as opposed to emancipatory perspectives on public health. This caucus invites sessions and/or individual abstracts on the following topics:
  • A socialist critique to “Evidence-based Public Health Policy and Practice”
  • Critical perspectives on pharmaceutical corporations
  • Globalization, health, and health care
  • Health Inequalities and Racialized Medicine: A closer look at current trends
  • Student Session 1: Critical perspectives on capitalism and public health
  • Student Session 2: Medical and Public Health Students Activism
  • Universal health care in the U.S.
The Caucus welcomes submissions on related subjects from progressive voices who wish to share their vision at the 2005 APHA conference, and encourages students and young professionals to submit proposals for all oral sessions. This year we will sponsor two Student Session: Critical Perspectives on Capitalism and Public Health, and Medicine and Public Health Student Activism, for graduate and undergraduate students of any discipline.

When submitting a session proposal (not just a single abstract), please individually submit all abstracts to be included in that session through the web submission process and inform the program planner via e-mail that you have organized a complete session (see address below). The e-mail should include the name, address, phone number and e-mail address of the session organizer, the title of the session, a list of the individual abstracts to be included in the session, their presenters, and the web ID of each individual abstract.
