Since Ernest Boyer's landmark 1990 report, leaders in higher education, especially schools of public health, have advocated that faculty members apply their expertise in new and creative ways in partnership with communities. The Institute of Medicine's November 2003 Report, Who Will Keep the Public Healthy?, endorsed Boyer's work. It recommends that academic institutions develop criteria for recognizing and rewarding faculty scholarship that strengthens public health practice and that the National Institutes of Health increase the proportion of its budget allocated to population- and community-based prevention research.

Despite the increasing support of community-engaged scholarship from national commissions and governing bodies, faculty still face challenges in gaining promotion and/or tenure. An important strategy is for faculty to successfully navigate the current promotion and tenure system by creating strong and well-documented portfolios.

This presentation describes an innovative nationally peer-reviewed, online toolkit developed from an educational study involving interviews with faculty, relevant literature and a detailed review of the faculty member's portfolio. We present strategies, resources and examples for preparing a strong career statement, curriculum vitae, teaching portfolio, and supporting letters from external peer reviewers and community partners. This toolkit focuses on continuous improvement, including regular involvement of national experts and ongoing evaluation. We will present year one of our evaluation findings, focused on it's usability and applicability for faculty preparing for promotion and tenure. The toolkit is supported by grants from the WK Kellogg Foundation and the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education in the US Department of Education.
