Abstract #120922

Winning a Health Access Ballot Initiative in Gainesville, Florida

Cynthia Moore Chestnut, DPA, Alachua County Board of County Commissioners, Post Office Box 2877, Gainesville, FL 32602, (352) 264-6900, cmchestnut@alachua.fl.us

Lack of healthcare access for working uninsured in Alachua County, Florida rose to the top as a community issue in 2002-2003. Beginning in the summer of 2003 a small group of citizens worked to develop a program to provide access to health care and health education for the 14,000 working uninsured.

In August, 2004, efforts to win public support for health care in Alachua County succeeded when voters approved a ballot initiative providing a quarter cent sales tax to finance health care for the working uninsured. This presentation will outline the steps taken in building public support and describe how the 2004 victory was won.
