Joan Ascheim, New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Chief, Bureau of Policy and Performance Improvement, 6 Hazen Drive, Concord, NH 03301, 603-271-4110, jascheim@dhhs.state.nh.us

Leadership, up-front planning, and structures for performance improvement will be provided. Some examples include a) the state's responsibility and funding of technical assistance to help local public health networks with their post-National Public Health Performance Standards performance improvement plans, b) the creation of a Bureau for Policy and Performance Improvement, and c) the formation of a "Public Health Performance Improvement Team" to guide quality improvement (QI) efforts at the program and system levels. As highlighted in the state's recent performance improvement report, the state's QI methods have led to effective and measurable improvements in health outcomes. The steps used for effective performance improvement in other areas that can serve as a model for NPHPSP-related QI efforts. will be described.
