Abstract #122273

Transportation, land use, and public health: Opportunities for designing and building healthy places

Howard Frumkin, MD, DrPH, Director, NCEH/ATSDR,Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1600 Clifton Road, MS E-28, Atlanta, GA 30333, 404-498-0004, hfrumkin@cdc.gov

CDC has recently identified and adopted a series of overarching goals. Seven of these goals belong to the “Healthy Places” group: Healthy Communities; Healthy Homes; Healthy Schools; Healthy Workplaces; Healthy Healthcare Settings; Healthy Institutions; and Healthy Travel and Recreation. These place-based goals reflect opportunities to incorporate health considerations into the design, planning, and construction of the built environment. This presentation will review the links between transportation and land use and health, and will focus on the recent hurricanes in the southern United States as an example of opportunities for environmental public health.
