Abstract #122275

Preserving and creating healthy environments

Parris N. Glendening, PhD, Former Governor of Maryland, President, Smart Growth Leadership Institute, 1707 L Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036, 410-268-6050, lisawald@comcast.net

It will touch on the importance of building in such a way that we preserve the natural environment (ie: wetlands like in the gulf coast, as well as forests and other natural habitat) to buffer wildlife from development and to mitigate the effects of stormwater damage, and to control wildfire. It will then focus on the other side of the equation-- making places that are healthy built environments for people to live, work, socialize, etc. It will include an explanation of how we can change land use policies to curb the obesity epidemic, improve air quality, reduce the prevalence of asthma, and otherwise make our lives healthier and more active.
