Kaiser Permanente Kids In Dynamic Shape (KP KIDS): A parent-child program to tackle childhood obesity

Di P. Lam, RD and Elaine Robinson-Frank, RN, MPH. West Los Angeles Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente Healthcare Organization, 5105 W. Goldleaf Circle, Los Angeles, CA 90056, 323-298-3328, Di.P.Lam@kp.org

Pediatric obesity is a major public health concern. Chronic diseases previously evident in adults now are increasingly apparent in children. Many public and private programs have been developed to assist overweight and obese children nationwide. However, there are few effective programs targeting parents in addition to their overweight children. Children with weight problems have special needs and challenges that require a tailored approach to resolve. Through an in-depth assessment process, the Kaiser Permanente Kids in Dynamic Shape (KP KIDS) program was designed. Data analysis and behavior change theory were combined to shape the program. A major research theme is that parents and children need a comprehensive program addressing both weight maintenance and weight loss which is delivered using a dynamic approach. The program's key components include nutrition education, physical activity, behavior modification, discussion of body image and participation of a physician to provide a medical viewpoint. Physician follow-up and reinforcement of the education delivered in the program is a distinctive attribute. The KP KIDS program was first developed and implemented at Kaiser Permanente Panorama City Medical Center. The program has been adopted by other Kaiser Permanente facilities and neighborhood clinics including the Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center (WLAMC). Recently, WLAMC launched a second KP Kids program in collaboration with the Westside Family YMCA. On evaluation, KP KIDS program participants have reported outcomes that include an increase in family time, an increase in knowledge, and have applauded the program's vibrant way of delivering health messages.
