Libyan Health Care System has a strong hospital base with weak primary health care. Sirt is the one of rapidly developing city of Libya located around mid-point of Mediterranean coast with a population of 107, 606 in 2001. It was felt that analysis of one-year data of pregnant women admitted at Ibin Sena Hospital (the only one for the Sirt Governorate) would supplement the Pan Arab Child Survey of 1995 for reorganizing MCH services. According to maternal attributes the mean age was 31 years and mean parity 4.6. By blood group 10% were women were Rhesus negative. There were 136 (44%) women who were anemic (Hg less than 11 gm/dl). Only three fourth of woman had utilized antenatal care. According to the risk status 20.7% women were at risk by age (being below 20 or above 40 years), 43.1% by parity (being nullipara or grandmultipara), 34.3% by past bad obstetric history and 43.1% by current obstetric or medical disorder. The rate of full term normal deliveries was 67.2%%. Pregnancy wastage (abortions and still births) was 24. % which increased by age and parity. The maternal mortality ratio was 22 per 100 000 live births. The proportion of single births was 98.2%, male births were 50.2%, low birth weight was 6.5%, and over birth weight was 5.2%. Duration of hospitalization was 2. The need for further improvement and strengthening of maternal and child health care service at primary, secondary and tertiary levels with appropriate referral system has been emphasized.
