Asian Americans have among the lowest rates of colorectal cancer screening of all the ethnic groups in the US; however, recent studies indicate that screening rates vary between Asian sub-groups. Identifying culturally specific barriers and drivers of colorectal cancer screening may facilitate efforts to increase colorectal cancer screening as well as identify high-risk individuals that may benefit from predictive genetic testing for colorectal cancer. The Study of Attitudes towards Genetic Testing for Colorectal Cancer among Korean Americans is a bi-lingual telephone survey of Korean residents in Western Washington. The study has three aims: (1) to assess the knowledge of genetics and attitudes towards predictive genetic testing for colon cancer, (2) to describe colorectal cancer screening practices within the study population, and (3) to examine the association between acculturation, colorectal cancer screening practices, and attitudes towards predictive genetic testing for colon cancer. A literature review informed the development of a conceptual framework for the study and identified measures of genetic knowledge, attitudes to genetic testing for cancer, barriers and behavioral drivers of colorectal cancer screening for Korean Americans. Development, translation, and back translation of the telephone survey were completed in November 2005. Bi-lingual interview methods to optimize culturally appropriate telephone contacts were pilot tested with the survey instrument in January 2006. Study completion is anticipated in June 2006. This poster will summarize the design, methods and preliminary findings from the study.
