Goals of the Sagamore Community Partnership: 1.To increase primary health care and community-based services for community members 2.To provide clinical experiences for students, focusing on a culturally diverse and vulnerable population. 3.To provide opportunities for students to develop an understanding social justice. The College of Nursing and Health Professions (CONHP) has had a collaborative partnership with the residents of Sagamore Village since 1991. A public housing community, Sagamore Village houses approximately 500 low income residents of varied ages, cultures, and ethnicities. The Sagamore Health Center is a community-based nurse managed center that provides primary care and public health services to the residents. The Center is managed by a nursing faculty member from the CONHP in collaboration with the residents, Portland Housing Authority, and Maine Medical Center. A nurse practitioner coordinates women's health care and precepts graduate students. Undergraduate students work with residents of varied ages, cultural backgrounds, and states of health. In partnership with Sagamore residents, students assess community needs and develop community-based interventions. Though participant observation activities (such as "bread day" and tenants councilmeetings) and the providing of a variety of community-based nursing services, students identify and analyze areas of social injustice and examine approaches to address these inequities.
