Recently, automated methods have made it feasible to produce tailored written health education messages for individuals. Tailoring involves individualizing the intervention so that the content and images are matched to an individual's characteristics, needs and interests based on responses to a survey. Studies have found that tailored written interventions are effective for improving diet, but no studies have tested tailored materials in Spanish, studied different distribution methods, nor the effectiveness of tailored videos. Your Healthy Life/Su Vida Saludable is studying the cost-effectiveness of 1). untailored nutrition materials vs. 2). a single tailored packet of materials vs. 3). tailored materials mailed in three sequential packets vs. 4). three tailored packets with interactive retailoring between mailings with 1874 low-income consumers (including 54% Latinos) for lowering fat and increasing fruit and vegetable (FV) intake. Participants also received a culturally targeted motivational/instructional video. All materials were in Spanish and English and at lower literacy levels. Good for You! is studying the cost-effectiveness of written tailored nutrition education materials (TW) plus tailored videos/DVDs vs. TW materials alone; vs. nontailored materials for lowering fat intake and increasing FV intake with over 2500 employees from 39 worksites. This presentation will discuss the cultural targeting, micro and macro tailoring approaches, and describe how the written materials and videos were tailored for participants in the two studies. Specific examples of the tailored materials and video segments will be shown. Data will compare how the tailoring differs by different demographic subgroups in the two projects.
