Rationale: Tobacco producing states represent unique tobacco policy challenges. Past alliances between tobacco farmers and the tobacco manufacturing industry have produced major political impediments to tobacco control. Yet, a recent “perfect storm” of political and economic changes impacting tobacco production and consumption has provided a unique opportunity to address these challenges.

This session brings together two projects and five researchers from North Carolina and Georgia who have used qualitative and quantitative data analysis to examine the attitudes and needs of this special, tobacco-dependent population.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the learner will be able to

• Discern collaborative strategies to facilitate positive policy change while recognizing the economic realities of tobacco-dependent communities; (4)Assess the implications of these changes for future tobacco control.
