Dioxin and herbicide epidemiology: What do dioxins do to people?

Richard Clapp, DSc, School of Public Health, Boston University, 715 Albany Street, Boston, MA 02118, 6176384731, rclapp@bu.edu

There has been considerable controversy about health damage in humans caused by dioxins such as the dioxin found in some herbicides including Agent Orange. The peer reviewed scientific publications addressing this issue now conclusively point to dioxin and also some herbicides causing serious health effects in humans. These include cancer, immune deficiency, central and peripheral nervous system damage, reproductive and developmental damage, endocrine disruption and sometimes death from ischemic cardiovascular disease, and other pathologies. Humans, like other vertebrates and mammals, respond to dioxins in a similar fashion.
