Early intervention Services: An approach to toxic stress in young children
Research has shown that experiencing trauma such as child abuse or neglect, homelessness, or extreme poverty or witnessing domestic violence may cause toxic stress, a condition that has short- and long-term implications for rain development. This session will describe the achievements and the difficulties experienced by two programs that used Early Intervention services to attempt to reduce toxic stress and/or its consequences, one with children who had been maltreated and the other with homeless children.
Learning Objectives: As a result of participation in this session, attendees should: - be able to describe how the new provisions of CAPTA and IDEA may impact certain groups of young children - be cognizant of potential barriers to the implementation of these mandates - be able to suggest ways to overcome these barriers.
