Abstract #149237

Discussant: Moving the field forward

Gregory R. Wagner, MD, Department of Environmental Health, Harvard School of Public Health, 665 Huntington Avenue, 1-1403, Boston, MA 02115, 617-432-6434, gwagner@cdc.gov

Workers, their families, and employers all have an interest in sustaining worker health and well-being. Traditionally, the fields of occupational health and safety (OHS)—focused on recognition and prevention of workforce health risk from work exposures and conditions—has been professionally and organizationally separate from worksite health promotion (WHP), focused on reduction of individual health risk. OHS programs address the work environment; WHP uses the workplace as a convenient service delivery point. This summary/discussant presentation will reflect on the information provided by prior speakers. The question addressed: What is needed to overcome the barriers identified in order to develop and implement effective worksite programs, policies, and practices that address both group and individual risk?
