Future Nurses of America Club, was launched three years ago because of the many children who came to visit the nurse's office in need of attention, or out of curiosity. Involving these students in the school nurse's daily activities reduced the number and frequency of student visits to the office. The club was organized and is managed by the school nurse. It is open only to 5th graders. The idea was initially discussed with the principal and teachers. They responded positively and cooperated to help make this project a success. Parental permission is required to join the club. Teachers assist with the selection of club members who must satisfy specific requirements to participate. Each member works 15-30 minutes per week, learning simple first aid skills, escorting classmates to the nurse's office and back to class and stocking supplies among other activities. Creating a current health bulletin board is the major monthly club activity. There is a graduation ceremony for club members at the end of each school year. The outcome of this program has shown potential for growth year after year because of its popularity among the children. There are approximately 30 active participants during this school year. This idea has been so successful that another school nurse has started a FNA club.
