Anna L. Marsh, PhD and Joseph Gfroerer, BA. Office of Applied Studies, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 1 Choke Cherry Road, Room 7-1047, Rockville, MD 20857, 240-276-1250, Anna.Marsh@samhsa.hhs.gov
The Office of Applied Studies (OAS) of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) collects a broad spectrum of data on substance abuse and mental health using general population surveys and facility-based reporting. This session will highlight new OAS findings on emerging drug abuse and mental health phenomena including the effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, misuse of over-the-counter cold and cough medications, emerging trends in treatment admissions involving older adults as the baby-boom generation ages, and facility data on pharmacotherapeutic treatment for substance abuse problems. Findings will be based on data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), the Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS), and the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS). In addition, the session chair will discuss the types of data available, current and forthcoming OAS publications, how to obtain additional tabulations from OAS systems and surveys, and ways of accessing OAS microdata files to conduct secondary analysis (15 mins.).
Presentations in this session include: (1) Impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and their Aftermath on Substance Use and Mental Illness (15 mins.); (2) OTC Cold and Cough Medications: New Data from NSDUH (15 mins.); (3) Morbidity and Mortality Associated with the Use of Dextromethorphan (15 mins.); (4) Older Adult Admissions to Substance Abuse Treatment: Findings from the Treatment Episode Data Set (15 mins.); and (5) Use of Pharmacotherapies by Substance Abuse Treatment Facilities (15 mins.)
