Employee assistance and health/wellness programs

Deborah Galvin, PhD, Division of Workplace Programs, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, 1 Choke Cherry Road, Room 2-1043, Rockville, MD 20857, 240-276-2600, deborah.galvin@samhsa.hhs.gov

The Workplace Kit provides employers with a wide range of suggestions, guidelines, and findings concerning the development and implementation of Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) and Health/Wellness programs. The Kit reaches large to small businesses with a wide range of needs for EAPs and Health/Wellness programs including financial challenges. Users of the kit can select from wide-scale programs to particular components of well-researched and documented initiatives. Further, needs assessment tools can help workplaces determine which components or programs will best work for each type of workplace. For those already using an EAP or health/wellness program, the Kit provides additional information on enhancing a program; adding diversity; parenting; bullying; harassment; and family issues. Finally, feedback and program analysis techniques as influenced by the changing workplace environment, demographics, and cost issues are presented.
