Abstract #165670

Ripple effect: Congressional outlook on abortion following the Gonzales v. Carhart decision

Heather Boonstra, MA, Guttmacher Institute, 1301 Connecticut Ave. NW, Ste. 700, Washington, DC 20036, 202-296-4012, hboonstra@guttmacher.org

This presentation will examine the current political landscape in light of the Supreme Court decision in Gonzales v. Carhart, in which the Court upheld the federal ban on so-called partial-birth abortion, even though the law lacks an exception to protect the health of the pregnant woman. This talk will provide an outlook for public policy at the national level, focusing on possible changes in laws, including the ban on public funding for abortion.
