Learning Objectives: At the end of the session, participants will, at a minimum, be able to

• Discuss the importance of establishing and employing valid measurement in epidemiological and public health research.
• Define the basic psychometric concepts of reliability and validity, especially as they relate to modern measurement.
• Describe key differences between classical and modern measurement.
• Recognize and interpret four fundamental item response theory models (IRT) and related concepts.
• Be an effective and knowledgeable consumer of research employing IRT models.
