Youth are over-represented in alcohol-related crashes related to the number of licensed drivers in this age group. Access to alcohol has been identified as a major contributor to underage drinking, and may play a factor in underage impaired driving.
NHTSA has begun a demonstration project, which tests the use of highly visible enforcement efforts to reduce youth access to alcohol. The messages and enforcement activities are aimed at those who purchase and provide alcohol to youth – often parents and other adult members of the community.
This portion of the session will include an overview of alcohol related crashes among the young driver population, using data NHTSA and other federal sources (e.g. the Youth Risk Behavior Survey), and a summary of the ICCPUD report and activities addressing this problem. An explanation and status report of NHTSA's underage drinking demonstration projects will be provided.
Learning Objectives:
- By the end of this presentation participants will be able to
- · Develop an action plan to support efforts such as the demonstration project to prevent youth access to alcohol
- · Identify the systems changes that are necessary to support preventing underage drinking programs.
