Maze of Injustice: The failure to protect indigenous women from sexual violence in the USA

On April 24, 2007 AIUSA (Amnesty Intl. USA) released a groundbreaking report, Maze of Injustice: the failure to protect Indigenous women from sexual violence in the USA. The facilitator will briefly present the key findings & recommendations from the report. The facilitator will then spend most of the workshop time engaging the participants in a discussion and group exercises connected to campaigning and taking action on the issues covered in the report at the national and local level.

Participants will leave the workshop with concrete ideas on what they can do to advance AIUSA's national campaigning goals as well as how they can mobilize AI members, Native American communities, and other constituencies in support of AI's campaign on this issue. This will include discussion of the opportunities and sensitivities related to working with Native American communities and in working on an issue of sexual violence. Concrete resources for internal and external support for local activism will be provided to participants.

Learning Objectives:

-describe the prevalence of violence agaisnt indigenous women in the US
-identify the challenges facing resolution of this problem including issues of jurisdiction, policing, and barriers to prosecution;
-characterize the role of internatonal human rights law, forensics and others legislation in providing supprot to survivors
