Diabetes Epidemiology
This informative session will explore the epidemiology of diabetes, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, pre-diabetes and metabolic syndrome. The relationship between pesticides, vitamin intake and family history and diabetes will be explored.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1) Understand the relationship between exposure to organochlorine pesticides and diabetes among Mexican-Americans; 2) Analyze the association between antioxidant vitamins and diabetic peripheral neuropathy; 3) Identify risks of lower extremity ulcer to aid development of effective clinical interventions and future prevention strategies; 4) Identify individuals at risk for impaired fasting glucose and diabetes; and 5) Identify the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its individual components in the San Juan Metropolitan Area of Puerto Rico.
