Session: Research Ethics
3218.0: Monday, November 05, 2007: 12:30 PM-2:00 PM
Oral
Research Ethics
This session will examine a variety of domains in research ethics through concrete examples: issues in internal and external adverse event reporting and safety within an organization; asymmetries and ethical challenges in research involving community health clinics; research ethics of clinical trials involving HIV-positive at-risk minors; research ethics and best practices involving maternal-child research in low-income contexts focusing on neglect; and ethical and practical challenges in family-based research involving an index individual and contact recruitment. The endpoint of the session is to enhance the capacity of participants to better recognize, articulate and respond to research ethical challenges both to protect subjects and enhance research process quality.
Learning Objectives: * Discuss challenges faced by researchers and ethicists involved in creating a culture of safety. * Identify structural factors contributing to ethical challenges that characterizes research partnerships with community health centers. * Develop an understanding of issues, stakeholders and policy strengths and weaknesses involved in developing a clinical trials policy and recruitment for HIV-positive foster children. * Articulate ethical issues and best practices associated with conducting descriptive and preventive intervention research from practical, programmatic and policy perspectives. * Identify ethical tensions and practical challenges inherent in research involving recruitment of family members in research projects.
