Ethical Issues in Public Health Practice
This session considers ethical issues in public health practice and challenges in decision making that engage the public health practitioner in the field. Issues both of process and concrete application are of significance. The session serves to address the need to engage practitioner perspectives and to consider the impact of contextual constraints on the decision making process in ordinary and extraordinary contexts.
Learning Objectives: Become familiar with approaches to public health ethics to effectively recognize and respond to ethical issues encountered in public health practice. Analyze and prioritize competing interests in a concrete example in the context of public health practice and ethics. Identify, critique and improve processes employed by public health practitioners to improve ethical decision making. Differentiate contextual constraints in ordinary and extraordinary public health contexts and analyze the impact of contextual constraints on ethical decision making in public health practice.
