In this session, papers will be presented on current issues related to prevention of, preparation for, and response to terrorism -- defined as “politically motivated violence or the threat of violence, especially against civilians, with the intent to instill fear” -- and on the consequences of the “war on terror.” Presentations will address restriction of civil liberties in the United States, international and domestic consequences of the “war on terror,” new developments concerning torture and other forms of maltreatment of detainees, and related issues.
Learning Objectives: At the end of the session participants will: 1. Recognize the consequences to public health, civil liberties, and human rights of the “war on terror”; and 2. Analyze measures being advocated to prevent and prepare for terrorist attacks.
