Leveraging Political Power: Working with Elected Officials to Improve Community Health
Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) is a community-driven strategic planning process that results in community health improvement. The National Public Health Performance Standards (NPHPS) local instrument, one of four assessments used to inform the MAPP process, measures how well local public health systems provide the ten Essential Public Health Services. Both MAPP and NPHPS require the involvement of community members and the entire local public health system, which is comprised of all the organizations, groups, and individuals responsible for ensuring the public’s health. As members of the local public health system, elected officials have a unique position in leveraging resources, advocating for public health improvement, and increasing visibility of public health issues in communities. This session will describe how communities across the country have partnered with their elected officials and how the involvement of elected officials has enhanced their MAPP processes and ultimately the public’s health.
Learning Objectives: (1) Understand the basic concepts behind Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) and the National Public Health Performance Standards (NPHPS); (2) Learn how MAPP and NPHPS provide forums for engaging local elected officials in community health improvement; (3) Describe the importance of engaging elected officials in strategic planning and community health improvement processes; (4) Learn how MAPP and NPHPS users across the country have worked with their local elected officials to leverage support for community health improvement
