Advances in Quality of Care: International
Initiatives to improve quality of FP/RH services have been ongoing for over 15 years. Most initiatives have used the Bruce-Jain quality of care framework or a quality improvement approach. One paper in this panel reaffirms the components of the Bruce-Jain framework through factor analysis and indicates that generalizable FP quality domains and an overall score are possible. Using a quality improvement approach with performance standards, one presentation discusses improvements to an ANC program mandated through policy reform in Tanzania. A third panelist presents a model of facilitative supervision that emphasizes mentoring, joint problem solving and two-way communication between supervisors and staff that is based on quality management principles. The paper presents findings from an evaluation of the methodology. The fourth paper in the panel presents an evaluation of a “Smart Patient and Smart Community” approach in Indonesia that aimed to enhance patient participation in family planning consultations.
Learning Objectives: • Identify interventions that can empower clients in their communication with providers and measure the impact of these interventions on client participation • Determine appropriate items for inclusion in quality assessment and derive domains of quality, including generating weights to distinct domains of quality • Define the facilitative approach to supervision and the fundamentals of care and explain how the facilitative approach to supervision is used to improve the system support for quality services • To describe the outcome of a performance improvement approach to AN and prevention of malaria in pregnancy and to discuss the importance of policy support to improved service provision
