Violence and Bullying in Schools
Bullying and violence in schools has a variety of negative health consequences for students, educators and bystanders. This session will present findings from studies done to review the incidence and prevalence of verbal abuse, physical assault, sexual harassment, and emergency response and management, as well as research to examine the relationship of academic performance to perceptions of safety on school campuses.
Learning Objectives: Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant-learner will be able to (1) Describe the results of research done to identify how victims of bullying act to reduce bullying in school; (2) Discuss the findings of a study conducted to determine the magnitude and consequences of physical assault, non-physical violence and risk factors for Minnesota K-12 teachers; (3) Identify the variables used in a study to examine student and faculty perceptions of school safety; (4) Articulate the results of a study undertaken to identify mental health and health-risk factors for bullies and bully-victims among multiethnic female and male high school students; and (5) List the results of an evaluation of a school-based emergency response project done in rural Kentucky.
