| This timely session will focus on the prevalence and risk factors for obesity in Canada and the United States. Presentations about the prevalence and risk factors for childhood obesity will be followed by a presentation about the possible relationship between maternal smoking and childhood obesity. Other studies estimated the prevalence of obesity in adults using a variety of data sources and the relationship between dietary patterns and obesity. | ||||
| Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1) Identify the afferent risk factors for overweight/obesity between young children and adolescents, and boys and girls; 2) Distinguish BMI risk factor differences between children, adolescents, and ethnic and racial groups; 3) Analyze maternal smoking as a predictor of BMI within a random intercept and slopes growth model; 4) Understanding the epidemiology of obesity in an urban setting; and 5) Describe the major dietary patterns present in US adolescents and the relationships of these patterns to risk factors for the metabolic syndrome. | ||||
